Materials and Tools Checklist
Procedure for Flat Button
- Thread needle with 18-24 inches of thread
- Double the thread and tie a knot at the end
- Position button on garment
- Insert needle from wrong side of fabric, up through one hole in button
- Place toothpick or matchstick on top of button (creates slack for shank)
- Bring needle down through opposite hole and through fabric
- Repeat 5-6 times through each set of holes
- Remove toothpick/matchstick
- Bring needle up between button and fabric (not through button hole)
- Wrap thread around threads between button and fabric 3-4 times
- Push needle to wrong side and secure with several small stitches
- Trim thread

Procedure for Shank Button
- Thread needle with 18-24 inches of thread

- Position button on garment

Procedure for Double Fold Hem
- Remove old hem stitching with seam ripper
- Press out old fold lines
- Try on garment and mark desired length
- Add hem allowance to desired length (typically 3-5 cm)
- Trim excess fabric if necessary
- Fold raw edge under 1 cm and press
- Fold again to desired hem depth and press
- Pin hem in place
- Thread needle with 18-24 inches of thread
- Use slip stitch or blind hem stitch to secure
- Space stitches 0.5-1 cm apart

Procedure for Patch Repair
- Clean the area around the hole
- Cut patch material 2-3 cm larger than hole on all sides

- Keep stitches small and even
