Graphics Suggestion: The Four Levels of Listening
This graphic should illustrate the progression from superficial to deep listening:
Design Elements
- A vertical progression showing four distinct levels:
- Cosmetic Listening (bottom level): Person appearing to listen but mentally elsewhere
- Conversational Listening: Person waiting to speak rather than truly hearing
- Active Listening: Person fully engaged, showing signs of processing information
- Deep Listening (top level): Person completely present, capturing both content and subtext
- Each level should include:
- Visual representation of the listener’s posture and engagement
- Brief description of key characteristics
- Small icon showing what’s happening in the listener’s mind (e.g., distraction, formulating response, processing, full presence)
Color Scheme
- Gradient from cool colors (bottom levels) to warm colors (top levels)
- Increasing vibrancy as the levels progress upward
- Subtle background elements showing increasing connection between speakers
Usage
This graphic would be used in Lesson 3: Active Listening to help students visualize the qualitative differences between listening levels and self-assess their typical listening behaviors in different contexts.
