Wall Assessment and Preparation
Identify wall types in your home (plasterboard/drywall, lath and plaster, masonry)
Inspect all walls for damage (holes, cracks, dents)
Check for water damage or stains
Look for nail pops or screw dimples
Test for hollow spots or loose plaster
Identify areas needing repair
Prioritize repairs by severity and visibility
Gather appropriate repair materials for your wall type
Tool and Material Preparation
Acquire putty knife/filling knife set (various sizes)
Purchase appropriate sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
Obtain sanding block for even sanding
Get joint compound/filler appropriate for your walls
Purchase mesh tape for larger repairs
Acquire appropriate paint and brushes/rollers
Prepare dust sheets to protect floors and furniture
Get bucket for mixing fillers and cleaning tools
Floor Assessment
Identify all flooring types in your home
Check wooden floors for squeaks
Inspect for loose floorboards
Look for damaged or loose tiles
Check for scratches in wood floors
Identify carpet damage or wear
Assess grout condition in tiled areas
Prioritize floor repairs by severity and use
Surface Repair Planning
Document all areas needing repair
Determine appropriate repair method for each issue
Calculate materials needed
Estimate time required for each repair
Plan sequence of repairs (typically largest first)
Schedule repairs during appropriate weather (for ventilation)
Prepare for adequate drying time between steps
Plan for final painting or finishing
